This tends to result in a <strong>narrow framing of possibilities<\/strong>: change is only allowed to the extent that it doesn\u2019t disrupt markets, inflation targets, or competitiveness. In other words, <strong>economics becomes the boundary of imagination<\/strong>, rather than a tool for transformation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet shouldn\u2019t it be the other way around?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shouldn\u2019t society first ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What kind of world do we want to live in?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What conditions foster dignity, trust, sustainability, and shared prosperity?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And only then design an economic model to <strong>make that vision possible<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<h2>Why This Inversion Persists<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors reinforce this backward logic:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Economic Reductionism<\/strong>: Policy success is measured in GDP, productivity, or debt-to-GDP ratios \u2014 not in wellbeing, ecological regeneration, or social cohesion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fear of Market Reactions<\/strong>: Political risk is increasingly defined by how \u201cthe markets\u201d respond, not how people thrive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technocratic Fragmentation<\/strong>: Decision-making is siloed \u2014 environmental ministries push for change, while finance ministries apply brakes based on economic orthodoxy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public Trust in &#8220;Neutral&#8221; Expertise<\/strong>: Economists are perceived as objective, even though economic models are built on normative (often growth-based or extractive) assumptions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Rethinking the Role of the Economy<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movements like <strong>Doughnut Economics<\/strong>, <strong>Earth4All<\/strong>, and the <strong>Wellbeing Economy Alliance<\/strong> reverse this logic. They propose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting with <strong>ecological ceilings<\/strong> and <strong>social foundations<\/strong> (\u00e0 la Kate Raworth)<\/li>\n<li>Redefining success beyond GDP (e.g. Bhutan\u2019s Gross National Happiness, New Zealand\u2019s wellbeing budgets)<\/li>\n<li>Centering lived experience and democratic input into <strong>what matters most<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is echoed in <strong>indigenous<\/strong> and <strong>feminist economic thought<\/strong>, where the economy is seen as <strong>a set of relationships<\/strong>, not merely transactions \u2014 and its purpose is to sustain life, not maximize surplus.<\/p>\n<h2>A Call for Civic Imagination<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To move forward, we must reclaim the <strong>primacy of democratic visioning<\/strong> over technocratic constraint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let economists help build the bridges \u2014 but let the people decide where those bridges should lead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEconomy should be a servant of life, not its master.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 Adapted from EF Schumacher<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Movements like <a href=\"https:\/\/earth4all.life\/\"><strong>Earth4All<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kateraworth.com\/doughnut\/\"><strong>Doughnut Economics<\/strong><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/weall.org\/\"><strong>Wellbeing Economy Alliance<\/strong><\/a> are doing just that.
