Of course, I don\u2019t know you personally, but I suspect you\u2019re reacting that way because you\u2019ve always assumed that prejudice is mostly wrong or unjust.<\/p>\n But… having a negative judgment about prejudice<\/strong> is, of course, a prejudice itself<\/strong>. So even that judgment might not be entirely fair. Funny, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n That\u2019s why it might be wiser to recognize and understand<\/strong> our biases, rather than reject them all out of hand.<\/p>\n Our brains are efficient. They save energy and time by quickly classifying situations, <\/strong>or for example people, and animals<\/strong> as safe or dangerous. This happens based on past experiences or recognizable signals. It helps us react quickly in situations that seem<\/em> threatening.<\/p>\n Imagine this: you see something that looks like a snake. You jump back before you\u2019ve had a proper look. Maybe it was just a garden hose \u2014 but maybe it wasn\u2019t. That split-second reaction could save your life. Acting too quickly might sometimes be a mistake, but not acting at all could be fatal<\/strong>. So better an overreaction than no reaction at all.<\/p>\n Another positive bias is excessive optimism<\/strong>, especially in new situations. You might know that quote from Pippi Longstocking: \u201cI\u2019ve never done it before, so I think I can do it.\u201d<\/em> That mindset encourages you to try new things. It can lead to growth and unexpected success, even without experience. Of course, optimism doesn\u2019t always reflect reality. But when combined with a healthy dose of realism, it can take you far.<\/p>\n On the flip side, you might think: \u201cI\u2019ve never done this before, so I probably can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s also a form of prejudice \u2014 and a limiting one at that. You\u2019re ruling yourself out before even trying. A little realism can help bring these kinds of assumptions into perspective.<\/p>\n Another common bias is believing that your knowledge is already complete<\/strong>. You assume you know enough, and that other perspectives don\u2019t matter. This mindset closes you off to new information. It limits your ability to learn and grow. It also makes collaboration more difficult: you surround yourself with like-minded people and dismiss others \u2014 even though they might actually complement you.<\/p>\n This form of self-assurance is closely related to what we call confirmation bias<\/strong>. That\u2019s the tendency to only seek out or accept information that confirms what you already believe. As soon as something matches your opinion, you think: \u201cSee? I was right!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In science, you also begin with an assumption \u2014 a hypothesis \u2014 but the goal is to test it critically<\/strong>. With confirmation bias, thinking stops as soon as the first bit of confirmation appears. You stop examining whether things might actually be different.
